Tour de Farce 2002
Note 2
Highway 401 to Chilliwack is not to be used for bikes (as per RCMP) so I had to take a back route from Langley. I only had 4 1/2 hours sleep. I started cycling at 4:45 am. When I started I noticed a bumping from the road. The road was smooth and so I checked the tires. I found a bulge in the front tire. I did not want to risk cycling over 50km to Chilliwack to a bike store. So I asked my cousin's husband to take me to a bike shop in Langley to get a new tire, however they did not open until 9:30 am! I lost 5 precious cycling hours. I bought a new tire, tube and spoke protector for the back wheel. I had the previous tire in the back put on the front and the new tire put on the back. I cycled Fraser highway and zig zagged to Chilliwack. From Chilliwack I went down highway 401 to Hope. Due to the heat and and lack of sleep I felt quite sluggish. My average time bore this out. When I got to Hope I found out our van driven by my wife, had broken down in Vancouver at her sisters place. I got a ride back to Surrey with my cousin. I was then picked up by my brother-in-law and taken to their house in Point Grey. I discovered that the bike store had put the front tire on in the reverse rotating direction which contributed to my slow ride to Hope. |
